The Batchwood Tennis League: Singles Round 4
Monday 2 May to Sunday 26 June, 2011

As Andy Murray prepares for his semi final challenge tomorrow at Wimbledon, we have winners of our own to announce. A fantastic 73% of all matches were played in round 4 which is brilliant. Thank you all for taking part, for all your efforts in arranging matches and for all your great tennis. We do hope you enjoyed it - and that you would like to do it all again next week! 
And so to our winners . . . .

GROUP ONE
Winner: Antony Parselle
After a 6 month gap between round 3 and 4, it seems Antony had put the time to best use. He won 4 out of 5 matches, topping the group by an impressive 5 points. This is not to suggest he had it easy, as he commented on the toughness of his matches with Keith:

“A really close match and probably lucky to win 2 straight sets. I didn’t have the energy left for a third!”

It was no easier against Charles: 

“A really good game in bad conditions, evenly matched and could have gone either way despite the 1st and 3rd set scores. Both ran our legs off and had some great rallies”

GROUP TWO
Winner: Paul Cunningham
Paul dominated group two, winning all 5 of his matches without dropping a set and finishing 5 points ahead of nearest challengers Ian and Hilary. Bish also performed well, beating Hilary and giving Paul perhaps his sternest test. He also had an unfinished match with Ian (leading 4-2 in the final set), commenting that it was “due to finish at a later date if Ian has not become a father already!” As it was not finished, we can only assume congratulations are in order Ian!  Meanwhile Hilary had a good match with Matt:

"There were many close games, but luckily at the vital moments my shots seemed to find a spot just within the baseline.”

All in all a competitive group, and again well done to Paul for his commanding display of tennis this round.

Indeed, Antony lost his first match of the round to Chris, who won both his matches. Who knows what the final table would have looked like had he and Charles played more games! Elsewhere, Gary and Jim had a tight match (“both players struggled with second serves, but was a good competitive game throughout”). But it is well done to Antony who is already limbering up for round 5.
