Round Nine

Monday 1st August to Sunday 25th September 2011

 

GROUP ONE
Winner: Jeremy Cooper
A wonderful group ends with Jeremy winning his second group one title, and his third title overall! He beat every other player to take a deserved first place, but was pushed to the absolute limit by Robert and David, who each won a set against him. Three-set classics were the order of the day, with the pick probably being David's win over Ted - he came from a set down and won the decider in a tie-break. Robert took second place by just a point from Mathew, after both had recorded 3 wins, and Mathew modestly wrote after one of these wins:
"David and I completed our game with me winning 6-4, 6-4 in an extremely close battle which I'm thankful to win, as I believe David is the better player."
Allowing for Nick's withdrawal, 93% of all possible matches were played here (14 out of 15), making it a very competitive and exciting group, and we hope to see you all back for next time. Can anybody stop Jeremy?
 
GROUP TWO
Winner: Ben Smith
Nobody really took command of group two, with a whole host of uncompleted matches and no real pattern emerging. However, Ben picked up 2 early wins, took a set against Steffen and then won sets in two unfinished matches to take the group! Richard and Sophie picked up a win each, while Steffen will feel that having beaten the winner, he could have mounted a challenge had he played more matches. However, we should take nothing away from Ben who takes the group by a distance and can now look forward to group one.
 
GROUP THREE
Winner: Christian Bower
Another great group, making this an incredibly busy round, with 4 players earning their bonus points, lots of tennis played, and several players getting 6 or even 7 matches in! Christian comes out on top after winning 5 of his 6, among them hard-fought wins over Mark and Linda. However, he lost to Thomas, who finished in second place (winning 4 out of 4) and who may be kicking himself that he couldn't play just one more match. Don also won 4 matches, a couple of which were great three-setters and he wrote in after his game with Linda:
"A spirited match in sweltering heat, Linda put up a determined fight to level and take the second set. We were both wilting in the third but I managed to find some reserve energy to come out on top. Great fun and well played Linda!"
Don also reported on a tough win over Charlotte:
"Another fun match, Charlotte raising her game in the second, matching me stroke for stroke, throwing in a couple of cheeky lobs and saving 4 match points before I finally took it! If it had gone to a third it could have been anyone's, as the skies opened and the rain poured down! Just wanted to say what a great round this has been - great spirit and effort from all players. I usually sit out the winter round but am really fired up and can't wait to play again!"
We hope the rest of you follow suit! Well done to Christian on an excellent round.
